3Sphere – A Brand of the Moment…

In the five years since my agency – Impress Media – has been working on behalf of 3Sphere, my own personal awareness of the office design industry has exploded. Although always inspired by graphic design, beautiful websites and fashion, I had no inkling as to the breadth and sophistication of an industry which in my humble opinion acts as a trailblazer for a wider consumer shift.

Despite the impact of the recession, our tastes are becoming increasingly stylised as the influence of glossy magazines, stylised TV shows and super slick websites shape our awareness of what is possible and indeed available. In terms of interior design and furniture, a mass audience is now aware of Charles & Ray Eames, Verner Panton and Arne Jacobsen as their ‘designer classics’ adorn the pages of Elle Decoration, the sets of ‘Mad Men’ or the shimmering pages of www.thecoolhunter.net and almost every edition of The Sunday Times ‘Style’ supplement.

3sphereblog_brand

The products themselves are of course uber-cool what with our retro obsession and provide the foundation for newer high-end brands such as Moroso, Porada and Natuzzi to flourish; lower down the social pecking order, Habitat and Dwell produce more affordable versions of the same products, but they are essentially selling the same lifestyle-driven dream.

These trends primarily stem from the office design world which has been utilising classic furniture designs for decades. The growth of companies such as Fritz Hansen and Vitra has established a licensing network whereby both the contract and domestic markets can access a vast back-catalogue of contemporary furniture for either home or office which have revitalised the pioneering achievements of the aforementioned designers.

Of course the office design industry itself is anything but static as corporate clients demand ever more innovative environments for their staff. When I look at the images from some of 3Sphere’s recent furniture projects, one just marvels at the vision that underpins the technicolour wonder that is The Guardian’s new offices in Kings Place, or the sheer understated elegance of Orrick’s cappuccino dreamscape, both located in London.

These striking interiors simply must have a profound impact on the respective brands themselves and indeed the actual performance of the people privileged to work in such places. They are statements of a company’s dynamic and intent; they mirror the aspirations of the actual business and ooze a glamorous confidence that lies at the very epicentre of most genuine brands. It is no coincidence that Prada and Gucci opened stores in the heart of Canary Wharf!

I make no apology for blatantly championing 3Sphere in this post. They too are a driven and ambitious company despite being less than five years old. I have had the pleasure of witnessing the business evolve from close quarters and they are now at a pivotal point in their history. The platform has been established for a concerted push into the very highest echelons of office design as their portfolio proves what they can do.

I encourage you to take a look at the 3Sphere site in detail and take a minute to imagine exactly what is involved for the company to deliver projects of such quality time and time again. The combination of exceptional design, stunning furniture and flawless project execution is the essence of the 3Sphere brand which is, absolutely, of the moment.

As part of 3Sphere’s fundraising initiative in support of Cancer Research UK, three members of staff agreed to have their heads shaved!

3sphere’s visit to the Vitra Haus in Germany

Amazing brands do amazing things and Vitra have excelled themselves with the creation of the VitraHaus located on Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein, Germany.

Vitra commissioned Basel-based architects Herzog & de Meuron to design the stunning structure in 2006 and it is now one of the company’s focal points.

3Sphere’s Brian Winward and Matthew Ellis (both pictured below) visited the building in July and were blown away by the sheer scale of the project. Futuristic from the outside, 12 separate internal spaces have been designed in the style of familiar domestic settings to showcase Vitra’s extensive furniture collections.

The project has already captivated the design-orientated media who have been inspired by the visionary concept that combines both architectural and interior design brilliance.

As the residential market continues to take influence from corporate office design themes, both Vitra and 3Sphere are perfectly positioned to benefit from our growing awareness of high-end furniture designers and brands.

Panton Chair 50th Anniversary Party

The 50th Anniversary of the classic Verner Panton chair was celebrated at an exquisite party held at the Saatchi Gallery, just off London’s Kings Road on the 1st of July.

The event also showcased a multitude of customised Panton’s entered into the Vitra-organised competition to commemorate the provenance of this design classic.

Brian Winward’s trout-inspired design stood proudly among a diverse range of entries which highlighted the creativity and dexterity of the architects & interiors sector.

panton_chair_comp_party_2The ultimate winner was submitted by London’s Jump Studio’s who hollowed out the actual chair shell and replaced it with fishing line: the effective is both elegant and innovative. Second prize was awarded to Ben Adams Architects with the bronze award going to Maris Interiors.

panton_chair_comp_party_1The evening was a great success and one must applaud Vitra’s ability to devise unique and visionary events that both challenge notions of design whilst also being great fun.

The Panton Chair 50th Anniversary Competition

Vitra have launched an innovative competition to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the iconic Panton chair.

Participants have been invited to customise a Panton chair in a design of their choice with all entries being judged and exhibited at the Saatchi Gallery on July 1st 2010.

Brian Winward, 3Sphere’s Managing Director, has entered the competition and taken inspiration from his love of freshwater fishing to create a vibrant ‘trout’ design with the contours of the chair representing the movement of the fish.

fish_chairDanish designer Verner Panton originally designed the chair so that it can be manufactured from one piece of moulded plastic and it has subsequently become a ‘design classic’ since entering production in 1967.

The creators of the winning piece will be awarded a set of four red Classic Panton’s.

Clerkenwell Design Week – London

Vitra Showroom Window

Vitra showroom window resplendent with event branding

Clerkenwell is the creative hub of London’s designer furniture sector and was the location for a three day Design festival running from the 25th to the 27th May.

Inspired by a desire to celebrate the creative richness of the industry, Design Week was embraced by many of the leading furniture brands including Haworth, Vitra, Fritz Hansen, Knoll and Moroso among many others.

A series of seminars, workshops and product launches characterised the event which highlighted the fast-moving nature of the sector. The 3Sphere team attended the event and took the opportunity to meet industry contacts and many of their furniture partners. Haworth hosted a series of presentations within their showroom which was transformed into something best described as a ‘village high street’ complete with sweetshop, bank and pub.

To much fanfare, Republic of Fritz Hansen unveiled the NAP™ chair designed by Kasper Salto complete with a ‘grooved’ shell to stimulate airflow when sitting down. I was particularly delighted to meet Kasper in person and have a brief chat about the design process and inspiration for NAP.

Dave Kelsall & Leanne Rimmer try the Vitra 'Chairless'.

3Sphere Designers Dave Kelsall & Leanne Rimmer try the Vitra 'Chairless'.

Vitra also trumpeted a new ‘chair’ but perhaps not in the form that one might expect! ‘Chairless’ is effectively a large rubber band that acts as a support for the body when sitting on the floor designed by Alejandro Aravena and inspired by a picture of a Ayoreo Indian using a strap to support himself. The image of 3Sphere designers’ Dave Kelsall and Leanne Rimmer speaks volumes.

More conventionally, Vitra screened a series of films by Charles & Ray Eames which serve not only as a design blueprint for their work, but also as a fascinating backdrop to the cultural times in which they were working. One was struck by the fact that even though times have changed alarmingly, time-honoured style and design principles remain largely the same.

Moroso share their two-tiered showroom with Flos and the combination of vibrant lighting and fabrics ablaze with colour creates a vibrant, almost phantasmagorical atmosphere which reminded me of Vivienne Westwood; ok, a different industry and perhaps even a different era, but the originality of both brand’s are equally challenging and forward thinking.

Quite apart from the sleek showrooms of the big players, there were numerous items of interest at the open exhibition housed within the Farmiloe Building on St. John Street. From the upholstered bright colours of Hitch Mylius and the Lammhults sofa in classic Paul Smith stripes, to the futuristic flexible love chair or the solid contemporary James Burleigh tables, the exhibition showcased a variety of stimulating products which highlighted the sheer variety of the industry.

DSC01921

The Expo. in the Farmiloe Building captured the essence of the event.

Recently used as a shoot on Guy Richie’s version of Sherlock Holmes, the location was perfect for such an event; set within spaces and floors created by seemingly derelict buildings, one could see the girders and brickwork of buildings from a previous age, from a different London when the city was untouched by the onslaught of modernity and architectural sophistication; the juxtaposition was most appropriate.

Despite feeling that I only just scratched the surface of the event, Clerkenwell Design Week provided many highlights and stimulations. Our fascination for all things ‘new’ shone through and the ever more adventurous imaginations of designers continues to amaze. Both the brand leaders and the independents jostled for the attentions of an audience clearly intrigued by the breadth of both product and talent on view.

The presence of writers from Wallpaper is perhaps an indicator of the events cache and posts from the expo. was added to the magazine’s iphone app within hours.

You see, design never ends and Clerkenwell Design Week provided a snapshot of where the industry is today; by next year, it will have moved on again as our appetite for cool environments, stylish furniture and authentic design grows ever more intense.

The Guardian’s Stunning New Premises – Kings Cross – London

The following article appeared on the blog of our marketing agency – www.impress-media.co.uk/blog – in March 2009.

The Guardian’s New Premises – Author: Andrew Pinnell

Of course virtually everyone’s lives are now consumed by the credit crunch and the impact of a failing economy is hitting the majority of businesses very hard. Inevitably, companies are analysing the minutiae of the bottom line and in many cases the plans to move or expand offices are being shelved and budgets slashed as Directors’ survival instincts take over. The initial desire to reduce overhead and cut expenditure is natural, but so often a flawed strategy.

Frankly, the recession is long overdue as the economy had become fat on loss-making businesses, sloppy customer service and exorbitant pricing across many sectors, especially retail. Now we are in a landscape where only businesses that embrace changing consumer habits, deliver innovative products, plus exceptional levels of service will survive. And thank god for that. The benchmark had become too low, money to easy to come by and we were all being fleeced.

Cut if you will to an episode of the three-part Media Revolution series broadcast on BBC and presented by the excellent Janet Street Porter. The series is inspiring throughout and a joy to people like me who believe in the digital revolution. Sadly, the UK SME sector has been pitifully slow to catch on and attempt to benefit from the vast commercial opportunities that are now available at the click of a mouse.

When I was a crimped haired student in 1984, it was almost impossible to envisage the media theories of Marshal McCluan who wrote of  ‘The Global Village’ and ‘The Medium is the Message’  as long ago as 1953 (check).  Well, it has taken 25 years, but we truly do now live in a global village where the communication channels themselves define the audience. If you want to target anyone under 25, the Internet is your only real option short of buying ad. space in the breaks between Big Brother. I digress, but it is a crucial point. The digital age is now a reality and any business that cannot adapt, might as well pack it in now. With the banking system in crisis, you have the ultimate excuse after all!

Street-Porter analysed the impact of the digital revolution on Fleet Street. Newspapers are being hammered not just by falls in circulation, but also by plummeting ad. revenues. The recession has sounded the death knell for recruitment, property and automotive advertising streams which have propped-up the press for three decades or more. These incomes will never return. We are living in a different place. The internet is taking over and, in the words of Kevin Roberts (CEO of Saatchi & Saatchi Worldwide), “the consumer is boss”.

It is not all doom and gloom by any means. Janet interviewed the editor of The Guardian in their swanky new offices in Kings Cross. The new media world shimmers on my TV and every element of the premises seems to scream style and cool. Shiny Apple Macs flicker, global images flash upon a myriad of plasma’s and every pair of eyes is glued to a screen of one sort or another. These screens now control us; we have started to touch them, they are talking to us – soon we will be talking to them!

The Guardian is responding to the digital revolution by redefining itself. 20 million people access their website every month, 7 million in the US. Video content posted online every minute; nothing is static anymore, half a million people can be on the Guardian’s site at any one time. Think about it.

The relocation of the business also represents a statement of corporate  intent, part of a massive rebranding exercise designed to cope with a fundamental shift in contemporary human behaviour; instant access, choice on demand, free content. Anything else is unacceptable to the urban consumer.

And as Alan Rusbridger, Editor of The Guardian predicts the demise of printed newspapers on my wall-mounted Sony Bravia, my eye is drawn to the beautiful interior design of the premises. Impress is delighted to be the marketing agency for 3Sphere, the company commissioned to source and install the stunning array of furniture in The Guardian’s new home. I am thrilled by 3Sphere’s contribution to such a ground-breaking project and marvel at the visionary working environment created by all those involved.

The digital age is paralleled by a design revolution where we are all demanding more from design in the broadest sense be it in the form of gadgets, furniture, architecture, cars and clothes. It has not yet touched everyone, but it certainly will.

Thring Townsend Lee & Pembertons New Bristol Office

Paragon - Bristol - Reception Area

The Paragon - Bristol - Reception

3Sphere has successfully completed the fit out of Thring Townsend Lee and Pembertons (TTL&P) new BREEAM-compliant offices strategically located at the Paragon in central Bristol. The client is one of the South West’s leading law firms and their stunning new fourth and fifth floor premises mirrors the dynamic ethos of the company.

Having won a seven-way pitch, 3Sphere utilised their full repertoire of design, fit-out and furniture capabilities to create an inspiring working environment that is both contemporary and professional. The elegant space planning and stylised loose furniture combine to create an understated yet cool atmosphere which complements the very essence of the buildings architecture.

Knoll’s Studio Collection predominates with chairs also by Boss and Vitra; Haworth workstations, WJ White tables and Bisley storage solutions suggest a “restrained quality” throughout and soften the divide between client-facing spaces and the staff zones. Vibrant colours and modern stripes merge with sophisticated walnut and shimmering glass extenuating the feel of ambitious modernity, themes in parallel with the client’s brand.

The project was led by Brian Winward, Managing Director of 3Sphere, who enjoyed the scope and scale of the brief: After a feverish pitching process, we were ecstatic to win this project as it challenged every element of 3Sphere’s product offering; the whole build and fit-out process gives a satisfying glow, but it was the design process that was so inspiring. We had a joint creative vision from the outset and our honest relationship with the client enabled the project to flourish.

Staff moved into their new premises in September 2009 and TTL&P are delighted with their new working environment. Project Manager Alison Holdoway commented:

When selecting a fit out contractor, Thring Townsend Lee & Pembertons required a company with all the key skills of design, furniture supply, construction and post contract support. We also considered whether the relationship would work between the fit out partner and our in house team. Most importantly, we wanted a company who were really committed to our project. 3Sphere satisfied us on all levels which is why they were selected.

We have worked closely together over ten months on a project that has been complex and required a highly specialist set of skills. We have demanded high performance levels, high quality products and finishes and, particularly in this financial climate, value for money. 3Sphere have responded to our demands and been extremely professional throughout the fit out project. They have been generous with design ideas, time and advice and their professionalism has been matched by that of the subcontractors who have supported the fit out.

3Sphere have successfully completed our project on time and within budget, providing us with a fabulous, contemporary office space that creates a stimulating environment for our employees.

Gone Fishing…

It may seem that all we do at 3Sphere is have fun?

Not quite true as we all work very hard, but we do also really enjoy some of our social passions; croquet, cricket and my personal favourite, trout fishing.

fishingOf course, company life often over spills into social pursuits as many of our clients and suppliers share the same the same hobbies. It is also great to get out of the office to relax and many of our key business relationships are cemented either on the sports playing fields or, in this case, on the chalky lakes of Lechlade which is Gloucestershire’s 5Star trout facility.

The hard work and networking had been complete over a few smokey ones the night before and our guests and the 3Sphere management team definitely deserved a mornings’ fishing. You just can’t beat the anticipation of catching a monster trout on a crisp, misty early November morning which ranks alongside those hazy sunrise dawns’ in pursuit of the elusive 8lb tench, or the night-time garlicky dry-mouthed mayhem of leviathan (spoken in a voice of awe, or is it a behemoth?) French carp. But, at Troutmasters, just like the American roach trap motel, they check in, but they don’t check out! For some, oh dear….

So, imagine the scene, the 3Sphere Three, the Interflor Two, the Flogem One and the Glass Fish trophy up for grabs. Pitched-up, tackled-up and ready to do battle we tripped along the muddy path to…. the lake! Dreams of 10lb trout were close to reality and numerous questions fueled our optimism; what fly to use? How deep is the water? Where are they?

Everyone spread out. It was soon becoming apparent that this was no festival of fish. …… Hold on, I can see Will calling Matt over to the front end of the lake. Mark, Brian and Tristan were still flogging the upper lake. Couldn’t see Andrew……….. Will started catching! ……….. What ho, we all sensed we should bunch up pretty close to Will and his ‘blade of grass’ (silly rod, fab fisherman).

Will was catching well on his way to four fish. Matt landed a monster eleven pounder. Tristan lost two from the boat (no good blaming your knots in a do or die competition, mate!). Andrew got the largest roach of the day – we all thought is must be the 15 pounder by his reeling action… hard luck Andrew. Mark? Brian? …. Well, we enjoyed it, honest.

Hup Ho… the Glass Fish trophy went to Matt, however this has to be returned by Mark as he drove off with it to show Mel. Tristan won’t be beaten and will return, I guess we’ll have to join him sometime before Christmas.

Will… looking forward to the smoked trout for the up-and-coming festivities.

A wonderful day in great company and I am thrilled that we can still do business in such an enjoyable fashion knowledge even in the current economic climate. Perhaps more people should try it!

Me? I’m off to work…..

Brian Winward
Managing Director
